Stars, 3,000 fans attend late soul singer’s memorial

Isaac Hayes
About 3,000 fans of the late Isaac Hayes gathered in Memphis on Monday to remember the soul music legend. Hayes died Aug. 10 at his home after suffering what his doctor believes to have been a stroke.

“What would you say if you were flying into Memphis and they said you are about to land at Isaac Hayes International Airport ?” U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen asked the audience at the four-hour service, drawing applause.

Funk icon Bootsy Collins and actor Richard Roundtree, who starred in the film Shaft that brought Hayes his biggest musical hit in the ’70s, both attended the memorial.

Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson spoke fondly of the composer, who had become familiar to a new generation of fans as the voice of character Chef on Comedy Central’s “South Park.” Jackson called Hayes “a lovely man,” praising the singer for his activism in literacy and education as far away as Ghana, where he was named a king.

Actors Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise and Wesley Snipes attended a private service in Hayes’ memory on Sunday.

Isaac Hayes apparently died of a stroke, police officials said.

The deep-voiced soul singer died on Sunday after he was found unconscious at his Memphis, Tennessee residence. No post-mortem was performed, but paperwork filed by Hayes’ family physician, Dr David Kraus, lists the cause of death as a stroke, police spokesman Steve Shular said.

Officers were among the emergency crews that responded, and sheriff’s department detectives were looking into the death.

Dr Kraus told investigators that he had been treating Hayes, 65, for high blood pressure, Mr Shular said.

Family members found Hayes lying on the floor of his home beside a treadmill that was still switched on.

The bald-headed singer, who laid the groundwork for disco and whose Theme From Shaft won both Academy and Grammy awards, was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He also acted in movies and provided the voice of Chef, the school cook, on the animated TV show South Park.

He had recently finished work on the forthcoming movie Soul Men, in which he played himself. The movie stars Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac, who died on Saturday.

Hayes was hospitalised in 2006 for treatment of exhaustion, family friends said at the time.
